Some moments in medicine stay with you—not because of a diagnosis, but because of a story.

Nearly five years ago, we surprised one of our patients, Esther, with a small birthday party. Nothing extravagant—just cake, ice cream, and a room full of people who cared.

Afterward, she looked up and said something I’ll never forget:

“Nobody has ever thrown a party for me before.”

I assumed she meant as an adult.

She didn’t.

She told me she had never had a birthday celebration. Not as a child. Not ever. What followed was a story marked by deep trauma—abuse in her childhood, decades in unhealthy marriages, and finally, later in life, the steady kindness of her husband, Mike.

Mike was different. Gentle. Present. The kind of man who quietly restores what the world once broke.

Esther passed away two years ago.

And just this past week, we said goodbye to Mike after a short battle with cancer.

If there’s something this profession teaches you—really teaches you—it’s this:

You never know someone’s story.

The person sitting across from you carries a lifetime you can’t see in a chart.

Pain you didn’t witness.

Strength you didn’t earn.

Grace they chose anyway.

That’s why the work matters.

Take the extra minute.

Ask the deeper question.

Listen when it would be easier to move on.

Because when trust is built—real trust—you don’t just know what’s wrong.

You know what matters.

And sometimes, what matters most…

is simply being seen.

I’m grateful I got to know Esther and Mike.

I miss them both.

And I’m reminded—again—what a privilege it is to do this work.
